CLASS TITLE:  REGISTERED NURSE-SCHOOL

BASIC FUNCTION:

Evaluate, plan and implement nursing services for each district student and to create a climate of health and well-being in the schools.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Supervises school health services, including physical examinations, immunizations, and tests for hearing, vision, and scoliosis.

  • Assumes responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.

  • Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters.

  • Supervises and/or maintains the updating of cumulative health records on all students.

  • Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs.

  • Visits student homes when necessary.

  • Participates with school staff in developing and implementing total school health programs.

  • Contact homes of children referred by principals, counselors, or teachers.

  • Advises on modification of the educational program to meet the health needs of individual students.

  • Authorizes exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious defects.

  • Advises teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health defects.

  • Assist school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools.

  • Attends committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum.

  • Participates in in-service training programs.

  • Supervises school personnel regarding annual immunizations and physicals in accordance with the School Health Code.

  • Administer first aid or nursing care for accidents, seizures, preventive medicine, and other educational-related medical problems; provide CPR and first aid to students and staff.

  • Dispense and retain medication and perform medical treatment in accordance with physician’s instructions within District guidelines.

  • Maintain stock of first aid supplies; assure medical equipment is in proper working condition; order supplies and equipment as needed.

  • Maintain current knowledge of medical advances and information, public health issues, and treatment procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and/or Superintendent.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

                           Any combination equivalent to graduation as a Licensed Registered Nurse for the State of KY
