Athletic Job Descriptors
Head Coaches-Boys/Girls
The Head coach has a multitude of athletic responsibilities. They will serve as a role model to other coaches as well as to players. They will be the chief individual in designing and assisting in the implementation of the program through the different levels (elementary, middle, high, and little league). Their responsibilities will include (but are not limited to) all of the following:
1. Have a thorough knowledge and abide by the rules in the Morgan County Schools Athletic Handbook, the KHSAA Handbook, SBDM Council Policy, Morgan County Board Policy, and the Morgan County Schools Discipline Guidelines. Meet all KHSAA Rules and Bylaws.
2. Conduct a parent meeting within the first week of practice to discuss team rules, practice schedules, game schedules, fundraising, etc.
3. Collect original copies of physical forms and drug testing contracts for all students (High School) who anticipate participation on a team or who participate in any open gym, conditioning, or practices PRIOR to any of the above. File originals with the AD and keep copies with you at all times. Provide the AD with all updated forms immediately.
4. Follow the chain of command (Coach=>Athletic Director=>Principal=>Superintendent)
5. Meet all Title IX mandates within their powers.
6. Be responsible for submitting the eligibility list and participation online with KHSAA, and submit team pictures to the Ad on a date specified by the AD.
7. Be responsible for submitting scores to KHSAA and appropriate newspapers/media.
8. Be responsible for maintaining statistics and keeping these up to date on the KHSAA webpage.
9. Be solely responsible for the care of the facility. Notify Athletic Director or, Facilities Director and Principal of any maintenance issues that need to be addressed as soon as possible.
10. Be solely responsible for turning off the lights and locking all doors/gates when finished with a game or practice when the AD is not available.
11. Planning and operating within the school activity budget.
12. Attend all required clinics.
13. Supervise students at team camps.
14. Assist the AD in scheduling practices, games, camps, etc.
15. Teach and model sportsmanship skills to players.
16. Be responsible for the conduct of self, coaching staff, and players in practice, on trips, and during competition. (Cursing, using obscene gestures, addressing the fans or other players in an unsportsmanlike way, or any other action that is unbecoming of an athlete or employee of the Morgan County School District will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action.)
17. Create and maintain a regularly scheduled practice. (Start and stop at designated times.)
18. Teach and practice sports rules, drills, and plays.
19. Inventory all equipment, uniforms, etc. for the program at the beginning of the season and at the end of the season. A copy of these inventories must be submitted to the building principal and AD. The Head Coach is responsible for ensuring that all uniforms and equipment are returned and locked in storage per AD or Principal location within two weeks of the end of their season. Final payment of coaching duties will be executed with receipt of said uniforms and equipment.
20. Be responsible for maintaining an up-to-date medical kit, which includes, but is not limited to, all finished physical forms, insurance forms, and other necessary items. Ensure that all necessary and required paperwork is taken to every away activity and readily at-home activities.
21. Keep a written record of heat index if required by KHSAA or your specific sport.
22. Monitor player grades with AD during the season on a weekly basis.
23. Promote professional ethics while representing the Morgan County School District as a coach or teacher. The code of ethics developed by the Morgan County Board of Education applies.
24. Be responsible for contacting players and assistant coaches if games are canceled or postponed.
25. In inclement weather, our school campus must be deemed safe before any practices or games are scheduled. Contact the AD or facilities director prior to conducting any practices on snow days to determine if sidewalks and parking lots have been cleaned and salted.
26. Oversee team managers and design a list of manager responsibilities.
27. Work cooperatively with coaches and administrators.
28. Attend all meetings called by AD, the Principal, or Superintendent in relationship to the sport.
29. Develop a positive player/coach relationship.
30. Plan and oversee their sports fundraising related to the school athletic activity account.
31. Be certified in CPR /First Aide and complete an online safety course.
32. Be aware of the player’s medical conditions, etc. in relation to the sport.
33. Strive to secure scholarships for players.
34. Follow approved sign-out procedures for participants during away events.
35. Perform any other duties as assigned by the AD, Principal, and or Superintendent.
